We've all done it. You set a goal that excites you and make a start towards achieving it.
Then life gets in the way and things start to slip a little.
Or the novelty wears off.
Your motivation starts to waiver, and all of a sudden, you're either starting something completely new and unrelated or you're just back to reading the newspaper - all of your energy suddenly disappeared down some bottomless pit of I can't be bothered-ness.
Sound familiar?
It should be!
Because I expect there's something that you may have only just started recently that you are in that EXACT position with, aren't you?
Something that, even though you know it's important to actually make an attempt on (you've already invested a lot of time in it already, so it must be, right?) - you just find yourself procrastinating on for any number of reasons!
Which is why it's a very good thing to set yourself a deadline.
Now...if you've read what I've been writing over the last eight years - then you'll know that I believe that setting a specific deadline for your BIG goal is often a de-motivator - especially if things get off to a slow start!
So...why am I changing now? Well...I'm not!
What I recommend you do is to set a fixed deadline for the NEXT step of your big goal...and make sure that it is a maximum of ten days away.
Now, if this next step isn't doable within the next ten days, then break it down into something that IS!
The key here is not to achieve your overall goal - although of course that is what will be helping to inspire you along the way.
Nope. The key is to make CONTINUAL progess towards that goal - and keep your MOMENTUM going.
You see - once your get your momentum going the three things begin to happen...
- Working towards your goals just becomes part of who you are as you working towards something (no matter how small) just turns into a habit.
- As you continue to make progress, all sorts of ideas, people, and opportunities will present themselves, which may even end up taking you in a different (but more suitable) path in the progress.
- Your life cannot help but change in a positive way as your continual action towards your growth and your goals will start proving to you that you ARE more capable than you could ever possibly imagine!
I don't care what you're aiming for in your life. Whatever it is - just aim to complete the NEXT step (however small) within the next ten days...and then the next, and the next.
Believe me, once you've done this just two or three times you'll begin to understand how truly powerful this can be!
So...what are you waiting for?!
